Where It Began
This is where it all began for me, after leaving school doing some factory work before I knew where I wanted to begin. I took on working in a Beauty Therapy salon in Mt Gravatt Brisbane with a lovely little French lady called Bridgett while I was still undertaking my training and certificates. I wanted to venture further, to develop my skills in Make-up. So with more training and courses in stage and photographic make-up. I then volunteered part-time and worked at Channel 7 Brisbane on the Family Feud game show contestants to increase my skills and my new found talent. I then progressed to working full time for 'Clarins' cosmetics company in Myer Brisbane City for a number of years here I became their 2IC and then onto manager.
It had always been a burning desire to travel so my long-term boyfriend who I met when I was 17, towards the end of year 11., when he was an apprentice electrician with a fast motor bike and used to pick me up from school on it. In fact I did many years on the back of a motor bike including going to work in my white Clarins dress with my hair up in the helmet and make-up leaving almost a cake residue around the bike helmet and a change of shoes.
Seven years later we were married but never proposed to (a sore point), I then I set off overseas and left my position with Clarins. On returning I worked for another company called 'Red Earth'. At the time a shopping centre close to home was in the middle of an expansion and Red Earth was opening a new store in its new section which I was asked to open and manage.
During the years I also worked freelance and put together fashion shows, worked on photo shoots, models, and models for the RAQ fashion awards back in the late 1990's, formal occasions and weddings. It was a great life, full of energy and fun. I still do the occasional make-up today and Beauty Therapy treatment.
I also put together and published my own booklet, kind of like a 'skincare for dummies' style. I gave my first publications to my sisters when they were young teenagers and never ventured to push it any further.
I have considered doing, skin care and make-up party plans where I can assess and teach individuals how to manage their own personal skin care regimes with how to apply make-up... for any age with selling my booklet on the side.
A lot of my decision making on what products I choose to use is now based on all natural products, it's an informed decision and I wished I knew earlier what I know now but I think with technology and resources we are only now starting to discover so much more and the impact and harm a lot of products can do. Once I became more informed and educated I know I wanted to make a conscious effort to make the switch 5 years ago with going green and I've never looked back.
In 2005 when my son was three, he was diagnosed with dermatitis, those who know the best treatment and remedy for this condition is all natural products; no perfume, no harsh abrasives and no fillers. He would make his legs red raw with scratching. I used all the commercial products that we could get from the pharmacy and now these days the supermarkets stock a lot of them. I was pleased I could fall back on my knowledge of skincare with a full understanding of what was needed. We are now able to keep it under control and still hope one day that he will outgrow it.
It was a midwife friend of mine who had already made the conscious choice and effort to make the switch to go green not only for herself, her family but also for the next generation and our environment.
With so little effort with just using the right products we can all make a difference, we have to use these products every day.
